Hindus want Ireland President Michael D Higgins and Prime Minister Enda Kenny to offer official state apology with frank admission and provide financial compensation to the victims of Magdalene laundries.

Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) today, said that our Irish sisters reportedly suffered slavery conditions between 1922 and 1996 as inmates of Magdalene laundries and were highly maltreated. They did unpaid hard manual work and Irish state was involved in it, reports point out.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, argued that it had left traumatic effect on the affected women and it was deeply saddening and simply wrong. It was moral obligation of Irish government to respond to their pain and start the healing process.

Magdalene laundries were a dark stain on the face of Ireland and Europe, Rajan Zed added.
